Eva Moskowitz is the CEO and founder of Success Academy Charter Schools. Notably, these schools emerge as the highest performing charter school network in the whole of NY City. She launched her first school in 2006 in Harlem, and within nine years she had grown her network to 32 schools hosting more than 9000 students in Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens. Eva Moskowitz has since immensely changed the education landscape.
Her leadership in education reform can be traced back to the time when she was serving in the New York City Council. Ms. Moskowitz visited various schools within the city during this time since she was the Education Committee chair of the Council and keenly listened to a number of issues. She explored and tackled every aspect of public education be it lighting quality, teacher service or any other.
The success experienced at Success Academy results from the unique educational techniques applied by Eva Moskowitz in running this institution. They apply curricula that are all developed in-house where they evaluated the various textbooks and found out that they were not appropriate, so they came up with theirs. Math materials used in this charter schools are based on the Contexts for Learning and TERC since they perceive off-the-shelf textbooks to be highly redundant.
These schools have also attained higher grades because of their close reading analytical techniques when using ELA materials. This strategy has been in place from the time when the first Success Academy School was opened in 2006. There also exists a policy here where inquiry-based science instructions are given on a daily basis to the elementary grade kids. These kids also get chess, art and sports lessons.
The vigorous advocacy for national educational reform and her wide range of experience are all that Success Academy needed to develop a distinctive design, curriculum, and teaching. Eva Moskowitz has B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and Ph.D. in American history from Johns Hopkins University. She once taught at Prep for Prep, which is a program meant for the gifted minority people. As a history professor, Ms. Eva Moskowitz handled civics in her teaching career.
