You probably know of Dr. Avi Weisfogel as the man who has revolutionized the practice of dentistry in the United States. Through his company, Dental Sleep Masters, Dr. Avi Weisfogel has brought new treatment modalities to a stubborn and rapacious disease that has been a perennial killer since time immemorial.
What you probably didn’t know is that Dr. Weisfogel has long harbored a passion for the spoken arts. As this article details, Avi Weisfogel has long had talents that extend far beyond the dentist’s chair.
Escape from the hood
Due to a confluence of unfortunate circumstances, Weisfogel was forced to go live with his grandmother in Newark during his 8th-grade year. On his first day of school, he was shocked to see that, for the first time in his life, he was the minority. With over 80 percent of the student body being comprised of African Americans, Weisfogel was immersed in an environment that he had only previously seen on television.
He quickly learned the hard realities of ghetto life. The grinding poverty and lawlessness meant that the most important asset a young man could have was street cred. At first, Weisfogel was bullied and even called racist insults. But he quickly befriended a number of students and started attending parties and after school rap battles. To everyone’s surprise, Weisfogel had a lyrical talent that few could compete with.
He quickly gained a reputation as being one of the most ruthless lyricists on the streets. In rap battle after rap battle, no one could touch his ability to freestyle devastating rejoinders and brutal dress-downs of his opponents. He began cutting early tracks with local producers. But after a close friend was killed in a drive-by shooting at a local chicken restaurant, Weisfogel recognized the danger of continuing to indulge in the game. He resolved to study hard and get into college.
But he never lost his passion for rap, producing and music. Today, after a 25-year hiatus, he’s wading back into music production. Given his towering accomplishments in other fields, Dr. Weisfogel is one aspiring rapper worth keeping an eye on.
